The Raw Edged Coat: The Makers Atelier
Firstly I made the brown jacket (below) in a viscose/boiled wool mix from Ditto Fabrics – as suggested by the Makers Atelier. I loved the shape and hang of it, the fabric and pattern were great together. The next step for me was a winter coat using a lovely wool/baby alpaca mix, but as this fabric could not be left with a raw edge without seriously fraying I made my own bias binding with some linen fabric. The linen had a lovely contrast of texture to the wool and I was able to find a much better colour rather than getting ready made binding.
I found The Makers Atelier by searching for independent pattern makers. This company produces the most contemporary patterns of the independents that I have discovered and I have bought a couple more that I hope to make soon. Although these patterns are the most expensive of my purchases to date, they offer loads of tips and the clothes have great shapes. I have had lots of compliments about my coat, I love it. I look forward to making my next!
